Sorry to bug you guys again, but I have a question about the paper gasket for the lift cover, the one that interfaces with the tractor housing. My lift cover has an "O" ring at the input port to the work cylinder and an "O" ring at the oil tube port on the tractor housing which puts the oil into the lift cover oil passage leading to the work cylinder. When I removed the lift cover, there was no paper gasket,but my O/H manual calls for the paper gsket it seems even with the "O" ring at the input port to the work cylinder. The O/H manual is silent about the little "O" ring at the oil tube. I just had the work cylinder overhauled in a tractor shop and I thought they forgot the gasket, but maybe not??? What is the correct configuration?

The "O" rings are necessary to seal the hyd oil pressure. The paper gasket may be omitted, and gasket maker in a tube used, following the directions exactly- IMPORTANT! insure that ALL oil is removed from the mating surfaces prior to its application. This is not for an oil seal, rather its to seal out water. Be sure not to get any gasket maker into oil ports/openings. If you'd rather use the paper gasket you can make it yourself with bulk material from the auto store, the gentle use of a ball peen hammer and your pen knife.

Thanks for the directions, Ray. I guess you are saying I need a gasket between the mating metal surfaces, be it either paper or "gasket maker"? I have the paper gasket, but wasn't sure if it would cause the "O" rings to "not seal" due to the increased separation between the two surfaces. I am not familiar with the "gasket maker" you refer to. Auto parts store product?
It is interesting that the O/H manual never talks about the oil tube "O" rings, or the parts book either.

It's best to use the original paper gasket when available, the gasket maker in a tube can be iffy. The "O" rings should seal alright, but if you're concerned just enlarge the paper gasket holes to the "O" ring OD size. I think the rings were an updated addition to the gasket. I always use new "O" rings at reassembly, the old ones may have an unnoticed defect.

Thanks, Ray. I have new "O" rings in the gasket kit for the lift cover so will install those.
