Just bought old farm in RI. Had TO 30 in barn which is having engine rebuilt. Would it hurt value or history if repainted a color ohter than the original gray?

Hey! I'm thinking of painting my '49 off-white and metallic purple, just for the heck-of-it. Doesn't seem like the past owner cared what color of primer he kept spraying on the "parts you can see." Originally, I think, my baby was red and white/off-white.

For my 2 cents, if you are not planning to sell it soon, or show it at Ferguson-related shows, don't worry about it. Paint it whatever suits you. If you plan to sell it, I think Fergy people will give a little more money if the tractor is the correct color, assuming equal quality paint and paint job. I know I would.

I agree. For that matter, they didn't all start life grey anyway. But as we say in the old British car hobby, it's yours, so paint it whatever you like. If you are trying to make a profit, well, that's different. Or, if you suspect it will bother you not to have it original, then pay attention to your intuition on that.
But anyway, there is no absolute conclusion on what consitutes the correct shade of grey. (If you can find surplus battleship paint from WW2 you'll likely be close.)
Regards,
Jim W
