I'm looking at a ferguson tractor and need to know how to tell the difference btwn a 20 or 30. This tractor has a 5 speed and a two speed rear. Has a 4 cyl.OHV gas motor.I can't seem to find out what distiguishing features are unique to the different models to help me I.D. it. The Serial Tap is not legable.Any body have any idea's??? I'd appreciate any information.Thank-you.

I'm still working on figuring this tractor out. I visited it today. It has a 4 cyl. OHV motor. The motor I.D. Plate has nothing on it. The tractor doesn't have a serial tag like I have seen on others. The steering column is supported by a cast part onwhich there is a casting number of TO3551. The tractor is a 5 speed and has a high and low trans w/ the lever for high and low located in front of your left foot. All the casting numbers on the various part start with HF. It has a ferguson hood like a 30 and says ferguson on each side. Could this be a late 30 with the 5 speed or a very early 35 before they changed the dash. It runs very well but I'm afraid to purchase it not knowing what model it is in case it has been assembled from parts. Thanks for any additional help.

I have a 35 and a 30 and I'm not familiar with any 5 speeds on these Fergys. That's the part most confusing to me. The 5 speed sounds like a Ford 800 series. Maybe it's one of those Johnny Cash, one piece at a time, tractors. Perhaps it's part Fergy, part Ford. Does the owner not have a clue?

The owner doesn't have a clue. I went back yesterday and drove it. Runs good and does have 5 spds foward. The 2 spd shifter is located in front of your left foot. Is this a sherman ?? I'm pretty convienced that it is a 30 now . I think I will post another question on the board regarding the 5 speed.

One more thing, the TO20 has oil filter inside oil pan, and TO30 has external filter, canister style. That's a quick way to tell those two apart, or (more accurately) to tell the Z120 engine from the Z129 engine. Castings on my TO30 show HF, and on my TO35 they show MHF. Tranny should have one or other designation if it is a Fergy trans.

sounds like either a to-20 or to-30 with a sherman aux. trans. if the brake pedals are not on the same side (right) it is not a to-35. the to-35 has two gear shift levers located on top of the tranny housing , also the to-35 has a proofmeter in the center of the dash. does the hood tilt forward ? does the tractor start by engaging the starter via the gear shift? the casting numbers on the engine for the 20 or 30 tractor will read z-120 or 129. the to-35 will read z-134.provided it has a continental engine.

Thanks for the help.It has one brake pedal on the right that works both rears and then one on each side that work the rears independantly.Only one sifter out of the transmission. It start via a button on the dash. Doesn't have the proofmeter. Hood tilts foward. I'm now convienced it is at 20 or 30. The 5 speed trans seems wierd. See other responses maybe it was traded out during its life? Anyway I'm going make an offer of $2700 and if I get it I'll research the motor once I can clean it up in my shop. Thanks again.

Thank-you. How do you ID the motor? Is there a Serial Number stamp? Where is it located on a continental motor? What is the difference between a 30 and a 35? Once again thanks for the help. I'm pretty knowledgable about Model A's but this is my first tractor.

If you can get a ser nuber off the dash or maybe on the rear housing or on the engine itself will help narrow it down probably a TO 35 or MF 35 by your description There will be a ser number on the engine somewhere I only have TEA 20s with the Vanguard engine but someone on here must know location of engine ser num on a Continetal.

Serial number should be on the plate on the left side of the block, at least it is on the TO-30.
