Would anyone know why the metal button on the rotor of a TO-20 break while the engine is running. This has happened twice now and I have come to seek an answer.

Just a question. Did it break or burn off?

Clint: Just a few thoughts to check out: wrong rotor or cap; the cap is not seated properly; the rotor is not seated properly (I doubt this); or there is enough distributor wear/slop that the distributor shaft has an off-center spin and the rotor can then hit the inside of the cap. Did things run fine in the past? David,MI

Hey david, thanks for the reply, yeah all of the electrical components look fine and as far as I know they are correct. The distributor shaft doesnt appear to have play in it but I have looked down that road. As far as the engine goes, it runs great, you can be mowing along and then all of a sudden and shuts down and there is the problem, this same thing happened about 3 months ago and here it has happened again yesterday. So any other info would be appreciated. Clint (oh)

Clint: It has to be something fairly simple... Check the dist. shaft--pull up on it, push down on it and then place sideways force on it all the way around its circumference. Is the notch in the rotor aligned with the one in the shaft (it may not have one)and is it a snug fit on the distributor shaft? Is the notch in the cap lined up properly--could your cap be rotated 180 degrees from where it should be (if so you'd have to move your spark plug leads to follow the timing order)? That about covers it, unless you have the wrong parts--check that it is a Z-120 engine vs later model Continental engine. David,MI

Check the numbers on the distributor and be sure the cap, rotor, condenser, and points are matched to the part, not just the engine. If somebody changed the distributor, the parts won't match up. There should be a plate on the side of the distributor body with the manufacturer and model number on it.
