Answer - When its a TE F?

Have just purchased what appears to be a pretty much original 1951 TE20 in good working order.
I'm curious about the serial number which begins TE A even though its got a Standard diesel engine and should probably be TE F.

Anyone got any suggestions why this should be so?

Howard,
I've re-read your post and now see what youre getting at - must have been half asleep the first time!! Has your tractor got the brass starter button on the right hand of the transmission casing which frees the gear lever to the start position? If yes, then your tractor is definately a TEF, and it would appear that someone in the past has swapped the upper steering housing for one from a TEA, together with the serial number plate. Incidentally, what is the serial number. If the number indicates a tractor built before 1951, then thats probably what has happened. If your tractor hasnt got the brass starter button then it could be a TEA that someone has replaced the petrol with a diesel engine, (unlikely). It's an interesting query and I'd be glad to see it answered, if anyone else has any suggestions?

Thanks for the response. Yes it does have the starter button and I was fairly sure the engine had not been swapped anyway. I'm also fairly sure the steering housing is original as the remains of the last paint job are consistent througout the tractor. (I reckon it was probably last painted at least 30 years ago). The serial is 194460 which would put the date in the 1951 bracket. My best guess is that it's one of the very first diesels and they had not got around to renaming the model as an F, either that or it was just a factory mistake! I wait to be corrected.

Howard, Yes, I think you are probably right about a factory mistake. The first TEF was produced in Jan 1951 as was the first tractor engined with the 85mm petrol or petrol paraffin engine, and when you think that over 200 tractors a day were produced, muddling the commission plate wouldnt be difficult. Whatever the reason youve got a tractor which is possibly unique - enjoy it!

Howard, I think youre getting confused with the model designations of the Ferguson tractors, which because of their number is very easy to do. Here are the most common Fergi model designations;- TE 20 Standard Motor Co built with Continental Z120 engine 1946-48 TEA 20 Standard built with Standard petrol engine 1947-56 T020 Detroit built with Continental Z120 engine 1948-51 TED20 Standard built with Standard vapourising oil engine. 1949-1956. TEF20 Standard built with Standard diesel engine 1951-56 TO30 Detroit built with Continental Z129 engine 1951-54. There were many other designations for models such as vinyard, industrial, etc but the above should be the most commonly met,
