The best mower for TO30?

I just recently purchased a '51' TO30. I convinced myslf that I purchased it for practical reason such as snow plowing and summer time mowing. I think that the real reason was to own a piece of history and a real tractor, not a golf course zambonie. Anyway, I want to look for a usable mower for my yard. I think that I want a better cut than a single rotating blade. Yet, I want something that does a decent jog in a five foot wide or more path (I rather pick guitar or mandolin and watch the grass grow than to spend the whole time cutting it). So what is the best mower? Finish(multiple blades) or flail(one of those things that looks like a mini field chopper)? Remember, I probably will buy used, I am still trying to convince my wife that the money we spent on this old tractor beats the go-cart mowers of today. PS. I mow about four acres a week.

I have a 51 TO20, which I mow about 8 acres of lawn in the summer. I purchaced a 6foot KINGKutter finish mower. They have a website if you want to check it out. This mower also comes in 5foot and 7foot. It uses 3 blades. Im totally happy with mine, have used it for 3 summers now, no probs. Cuts very nicely. Good luck! Jeff

I just got a '51 TO30 in April...and a brand new 5' rotary cutter in July. They work well together after you figure out how to keep the lift to sit still. I use a chain to stop the depth on the lift arms and leave the lever set low.

The rotary cutter was about 1/2 the cost of a finish mower and it tackles the heavier tallgrass and brush. It WILL NOT put a smooth cut on brome and fescue, but I don't mind this. I like to let things grow and only mow to control weeds. I hear you can improve the cut with updraft attachments and a sharper than factory edge on the blades but I haven't bothered.

One advantage of the rotary over the finish: I have a lot of scattered field stones and cannot always avoid them. The rotary chews up limestone and anything else. The finish would probably not fair as well.

A five foot, three point hitch finish mower is probably the optmial size for a TO30. A problem that arises is that even using first gear you will overrun tall grass, this means you must stay current with your mowing. If you don't require a manicured lawn, a sharp five ft. rotary mower will do a good job; one of the light weight models. Plus, a rotary mower is about 1/3 the cost of a TPH five ft. finish mower. A Zanethang is needed to maintain cutting height, or use a chain to hold the rotary mower to desired height which is a real pain.

We use a 5ft ford finishing mower to mow about 2 acres a week. It works great and is easy to adjust on our 3 point hitch. if i remember right we found this one used and in great condition for $300-400. WE use this on our Ford 1100, but we also have a 1951 To-30 just like yours that we pull a 5ft JD brushog with. be sure to put a slip clutch on your pto before using any mower, for safety. Good luck hunting, and good luck talking your wife into it!
