I RECENTLY PUT TOGETHER A LATE MODEL TO 20. AFTER GETTING IT RUNNING. I TRIED OUT THE HYD. SYSTEM THE P.T.O. WILL STAY ENGAGED FOR ABOUT A MINUTE, THEN IT WANTS TO WORK ITSELF OUT. THE LEVER ROCKS BACK AND FORTH SLIGHTLY ,THEN IT KICKS OUT. I CAN HOLD IT IN GEAR WITH A BUNGEE CORD AND IT WILL STAY ENGAGED. MY MAIN PROBLEM IS WHEN YOU RAISE THE LIFT ARMS TO THE TOP THE P.T.O. KICKS OUT A HARD THUD.I HAVE TAKEN THE PUMP BACK OUT AND CHECHED AND CLEANED THE RELIEF VALVE AND COTROL VALVE AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE WITH OUT TAKING THE RELIEF VALVE A PART. THE PUMP INSIDES ARE CLEAN AND IT SEEMS TO WORK GOOD IN THE TRACTOR WITH NO LOUD NOISES AND SUCH. IT LIFTS SMOOTH AND WILL HOLD AT VARIOUS PLACES WHILE LIFTING. IT ONLY KICKS OUT WHEN THE LIFT ARMS ARE AT THE VERY TOP. ALL LIFTING IS BEING DONE WITH ONLY THE WEIGHT OF THE LIFT ARMS & STABILIZER BARS, NO IMPELEMENTS ATTACHED. I WOULD APPREICATE ANY INFORMATION ANYONE CAN GIVE ME. THANKS

thanks for the advice i did go on and check the clutch dogs and the were o k . idid find that the p t o shaft was bent. i put one in from a parts tractor i have (after replacing bearings and such) and it now works fine. thank you for taking time to help me out. i'm gonna go and comb the hair i have left.thanks again.randy

If the PTO shaft is bent so that it is making the sliding coupler move in and out this will make it jump out of gear.

If the PTO shaft will move in and out in the bearing housing on back it will not stay in gear. This is usually caused by a bad PTO shaft bearing, the bearing locking collar having moved out of place or the snapring retainer in the housing being damaged.

Last the PTO coupler itself may be worn out and need replaced but this will not usually cause the PTO lever to rock back and forth as you describe. I would lean more toward a bent shaft. If the shaft has been changed to 1-3/8" it more likely to be bent because the original 1-1/8" is made of a lot better material.

Sounds like the dog clutch which connects the bottom gear shaft to the pto drive is worn. How does the PTO behave under load? To access remove lever and side plate as this disconnects the linkage, withdraw pto shaft, and split tractor gearbox from backend, it is the module attached to the lower part of the gearbox, probably a bearing gone.
