Near me is a TO-20 for sale that appears to be in good shape but Im not familiar with fergies so here are a few questions. It appears to have a 4 speed tranny with a "s" position. whats this for? What should I look for? I already see the right axle seal is leaking, Nothing I havent seen on other makes though. I would like to hook a tiller up to it. Can it handle it? The owner has to chain the bush hog up so it wont cut to low. Is it a charactoristic of this type of hydrolics? Thanks all.

The S position is to start the tractor. When you push the shift lever over into that position a mechanical linkage pushes on the starter switch. Keeps you from starting it in gear.
Check the center pivot on the front axle for wear and the beam itself for cracks near the pivot area. Also check the spindle bushings for wear.
The axle seal on these is outside of the axle bearing so you have to remove the retainer and bearing to replace the seal.
There is no position control on the hydraulics only draft control. you can use chains or get a Zane Thang to solve the height problem.
I have never used a tiller but have read that even first gear is to fast for effective tiller use.
