I ve got a problem with my TE20, The tractor wont free wheel and the brakes are not binding, I jacked up one wheel wedged the clutch pedal down and turned the wheel, in 1st and 2nd gear the wheel is a little stiff, in 3rd, 4th and reverse i cant turn the wheel at all as if they were seized. I would be grateful if someone could tell me what the fault is likely to be.

Jon: Before you start taking things apart, check to see that your clutch is not frozen and that it is adjusted properly (3/16 inch free play from its stop). There are quite a number of posts about this topic on this site (archives). Essentially you start your tractor and nose it up to a solid object (tree, huge bolder, etc.). Put it in high gear and engage/disengage the clutch a few times to free it up. Some of the archived posts are more descriptive with variations on the same theme. If that does not work, my guess is you'll be doing what Rod suggested or splitting your trator to replace the clutch. Good luck and keep us posted. David, MI

It is pretty common for the shift rails to get stuck between gears as they wear. You could have internal damage to the transmission but I would take the shifter lever off first it is just the two nuts and it pulls right out. Look to see if the slots all line up if not try putting them in line and see if it makes a difference. It is where I would start anyway. regards
