I have a 1955 TO-35 that is running ruff, especially at idle. I have replaced plugs, wires, points and condensor, rewired the electrical system and replaced the carb with a new Zenith model. I thought the float was sticking in the old one causing it to flood. You could pull the hose off the air inlet and gas would come out, even after I rebuilt the orignal carb. This stopped with the new Zenith carb, but it still wants to smoke black a little and it sounds like popping corn when you run it. It hasn't foulded the plugs yet though. Could I have vlave problems? Daniel, you have a chellenging problem in logic!
Is the corn popping sound coming out of the engine block or out the exhaust? Preignition knock could be described like popping corn.
Check whether the distributor shaft rotates freely approx 10 degrees to provide spark advance; it might be stuck on full advance due to a broken spring, rusted counterweight, etc. Black smoke is usually unburned gas -- use a mirror if needed to check whether the new Zenith opens the choke butterfly fully when the choke rod from the dashboard is pushed in.
Are the popping and smoke noticeable only at idle? Do they go away at higher rpm, under load, moving with no load etc?

It could be a head gasket blown between two cylinders, crossed plug wires, intake valve burned, Intake valve spring broke, exhaust valve not opening, a rocker arm bad or set to tight. Any one of these will cause them fire back through the carburetor
