Sediment Bowl Gasket, What Effect Does it Have On Gas Glow?

OK This has been with me since I bought the TO-20 5 years ago. The sediment bowl gasket if tightened enough so there is no seepage on the glass won't let the gas flow right. I have checked the whole fuel system and inside the tank, blown it out and used it with the cap off. Its like it has vapor lock. Once it works it seems to continue ok for some time. Its an original HF sediment bowl with clean disks valve ect. Any ideas as this is gettin old.

Every time I buy a tractor there is something wrong with the sediment bowl assembly. Must be the issue that causes the most sales... grin. And every time I try to fix it (I never learn). I always end up replacing the whole assembly (about $20 US) and no more problem. My local Ford-Fergy used sales/repair guru carries the gaskets, etc., for repair but even says himself he doesn't use them. It is cheaper to replace the assembly than screw with the old one for eternity. A lot cheaper if the old one leaks and you have a fire. Now others may have different experience, and maybe I just don't hold my mouth right, but that's mine.

You know perhaps this is darned sound advice. Just yesterday my Farmall started cutting out just like the Fergy does. Its time to change out both of the darned things so I don't have to constantly be messing with an otherwise simple system. Thanx

Good Morning

I had the same problem with my fergy. I tried to replace the gasket. My local Massey-Ferguson dealer sold me a replacement gasket. It was not the cork type, but a rubber one.The sediment bowl leaked worse then ever. My solution was to replace the sediment bowl all together, problem was they dont make the sediment bowls for fergy's anymore. My local dealer sold me a sediment bowl from a MF-35 it looks a wee bit different, but works just fine. Its not original, but in my case, Its the best I could do. I hope this helps. It cost me $32 Canadian. Good Luck

Perhaps I misstated the problem. Its not leaking. The problem is that when tightened enough so it doesn't leak the gas simply doesn't flow properly. Thats more aggravating yet because its a sometimes, sometimes not affair. Come to think of it the cork one was on its last legs so I replaced it with the "BETTER" neoprene one and the trouble began. I probably will get a new bowl.

Tighten it up so it does not leak. The sediment bulb will remain full of air until the carb calls for fuel and then it will fill with fuel. Trust it.

Hi

If gas is not comming when you open the valve
when bowl is tight ...it is normal"
Because there is air in bowl.

Next time try this...open valve and start engine
then the gas will begin to flow and then fill
the bowl.

Driziler,

Joe is right- you have a vapor lock. Put the assembly together. Loosen it up so it isn't tight. Then open the feed valve and fill the bowl until gas runs past the gasket onto the ground. Then shut the valve and tighten the screw so it wont leak. Wipe everything off, let the spilled gas evaporate and then when all is dry then run the engine and all will work.

After installing an inline fuel filter, I have tested gas flow on my TE20 by removing the float bowl drain plug and waiting for gas to dribble out. This method clears air out of the line as the gas comes downhill from the tank. When it starts to run out of the float bowl, I shut off the tank petcock and replace the drain plug.
