Oil pressure gage tubing

When I tore down my '53 TO-30 engine for an overhaul a few weeks ago I made a mental note of the oil pressure gage tubing routing. It goes something like this - from the tapped hole in the right side of the block (back near the bell housing), up to the tapped hole in the rear of the head, a tee is in this line and the third leg of this tee goes to the fitting on the back of the gage.

Now that I'm FINALLY putting things back together I noticed something different in my manuals. My shop and parts manuals show the gage tubing going from the block to the gage with a plug in the rear of the head.

Can anyone tell me why someone would tap into the head? Should I change to the simple routing shown in the manuals?

Thanks, Boogity

my 52 to30 is exactly as you describe yours. Don't think someone tapped the head except in the factory. As far as I can tell, mine was never apart until I did an overhaul. I think the hole in the head might have something to do to aid the valve oiling but I don't know for sure. I put it back the way it came - not like the manual.
