TO-30 needs brake job from it's new owner.

I became the high bidder for a TO-30. The tractor is in better than working condition as it has many new (major) parts and has been to many a show. The problem is that the brakes have no affect. I want to do things right and I want to learn to fix it myself. Where do I do my reaserch to know what I am doing before I start? Helpfull information will be much appreciated!!!

You can buy a reprint owners manual from a MF dealer. The manual covers almost everything you will ever need to work on. I've nearly worn mine out, I guess that's ok, I'm nearly worn out too.

Get a manual. Links on left may help. MF Dealer may have one also. Many of the tractor mail order houses have them. Then check the brake linkage to make sure it is ok. Or if the linkage is ok, maybe the brakes just need adjustment. The holes in the back of the drums allow for that, but read the manual. If that doesn't work, you have 4 brake shoes. New ones can be bought for about $60. Yours could be oil soaked. If so, you will have some axle seals to replace, and these are not expensive but they require some effort on the TO30 as they must be pressed on. Hope that helps.

Thanks for your wonderfull information. I checked Ebay, and there seems to be many manuals availible($25 including S/H). But which one? There are owner's, service, carb., 51-52 TO-30, 53-54 TO-30. When reading the descriptions, the 53-54 TO-30 says it covers 51-54. Is it any better than the 51-52 TO-30? Maybe I am splitting hairs. I just want to get the best one, or do you see value in having more than one or all? Again, all helpfull information is much appreciated.

TO30 51-54 should be same. Service and parts manuals are good. The parts manuals show better drawings sometimes and give more info if you have to order something obscure. Check this website, as it is free and we like to patronize the advertizers when we can. If you have leaking seals, there is an inner and an outer seal. You have to cut at least one of them off (I forget) and press it on. Axles come out easy. If you have fluid in tires, handle them carefully and upright. But you may just have an adjustment problem, especially if you don't see evidence of leaking lube on the wheels. All you need to tighten the shoes is a jack and a screwdriver.
