I just read your reply down below on the subject of oil.

I was told that gear oil and mineral oil were basically the same thing. Have I been mis-informed?

All I "know" is what I've gathered from this group and the Ferguson tractor club on Yahoo. Whenever this comes up it usually gets a lot of comments.

Gear oil is meant for, well, gears and doesn't have the right properties for long term use in a hydraulic system. I have no idea what the long term effects would be.
Hydraulic oil doesn't have the right properties for gears and will lead to excessive wear and early failure.
There are more modern gear/hydraulic oils like Ford 135 that are supposed to do the same job as the mineral oil. Some people say it gets to thin in hot weather. It seems to be what the 8N guys around here use.
Mineral oil is what Ferguson said to use and they should know.
When I was ready to go out and use my tractor for the first time the only Massey dealer (hour drive each way) didn't have any mineral oil in stock. I went to the Ford dealer and got the 135 and it seems to work fine. The one thing that turns me off about the mineral oil is the need to change it from 90 in summer to 80 in winter. I hoped you had found a source for a multigrade mineral oil.
I really wish I knew more about this but thats it.

Neal

I'm not an expert, but when I bought my 35, I couldn't find anyone that knew what I was talking about when I asked for 90 wt. mineral oil, including the MF dealer. I work at an oil refinery and did some research on gear lubes and found out the following. Gear lubes are graded from GL-1 thru GL-6 depending on the amount of additives they have to perform in various applications. GL-5 and GL-6 are used for extreme duty,(heavy equipment, mining etc.). GL-3 and GL-4 are the lubes most people are familiar with, but have additives that would corrode brass and bronze, which is why you wouldn't use them in a syncronised transmission or in a hydraulic pump.GL-1 is a mineral oil gear lube with no harmful additives that would brek down in time and turn the oil acidic. This grade is what you need to use in systems like on our Fergusons. So if you get a funny look from the guy behind the counter when you ask for mineral oil gear lube, tell him you need a GL-1 rated gear oil and your chances may improve that he can find what your looking for, it did for me. I hope this helps.

Dan;
This is exactly what I was told when I contacted
Valvoline for clarification of the same topic.
I ended up buying GL1 made by Chevron since I
couldn't find Valvoline or any other brand locally.

Dan

Thanks for the info. Were you able to find a multigrade (80w-90 or 85w-90) in a GL-1 type lube?

Neil, Quality Oil Co. in Valparaiso IN. 55 N. 400 East Valparaiso. Right off RT. 30, 1-(800)-999-2951, has 90wt. in stock and has a Pennzoil 80w-90 wt. on order that should be in, in a couple of weeks. They said they have been getting requests from antique tractor owners for this oil and have found the multi grade available from Pennzoil. If anyone should give them a call, ask for Dan at extension 327, he knows exactly what we're talking about.

Neil, I was in a hurry so I bought what Quality Farm and country had which was labeled, Ford transmission oil GL-1, 90 wt. I'm sure the multi grades are out there if you go thru an oil distributer, which I plan to do next time.
