What to do when you hit a hive?

I was mowing with my TO-20 last weekend and took the top inch off a hive that was in the ground. I was probably going faster then I should have, which put me a good ways past the hive before the yellow jackets figured out who the culprit was.I don,t think going slower would have helped me see that there was a hive there in the first place.

I had a friend who got swarmed once while mowing and was hurt badly when he jumped off the tractor. Any opinions on what is the best thing to do in this situation?

I was bush hogging once with our old Ferguson TO-20 and hit a hive of yellow jackets and got stung 17 times. As soon as I got stung twice and seen more coming I put the tractor in rode gear and tried to get away as fast as possible but believe me they can keep up with that tractor running across the field wide open. I drove probably 350 feet and decided to put the tractor in neutral and jump off because they were stinging me left and right. I headed for our little pond that is only about 3 1/2 deep and jumped in. This was the best thing I done to get away even though my feet was in about a 1 1/2 of mud at the bottom. Later, that night I fixed them, I poured gas around their hive and lit it.
