I'm well into my TO-30 engine overhaul

My engine overhaul is going pretty well (if I could just find time to work on it). I found a plugged oil port in the top of the rear camshaft bearing. When I started to use an awl to pick out the plug it appeared to be put there intentionally. The plug material looks like it may be rubber or even a wooden dowl. Of course it's oil soaked and very dark in color. The condition of the cam journal and the bearing surface in the block seem to pretty good. Anybody know why someone would plug an oil port?

I was thinking also why would an oil port be blocked off. The only quess I have is the old oil jars were like quart glass jars and had a metal funnel on them some folks used to place a cork in the end to keep bugs and dirt out, just a thought some cork fell into the oil.

The site will not let me in, says I'm not the owner of the photos. I'd like to see them if you don't mind showing this old man how to access them.

Let's try this one. I've never done this stuff before. Please let me know if this works.

I think your pictures are great also. The flywheel/ring gear has been repaired by someone who knows the trade, this is a common practice to use set screws to hold two pieces so they won't slip,it's refered to in the toolmaking trade as "jew screws"; no deroggitory intent inferred. I enjoy seeing these old tractors given new life. Remain laidback and unruffled, old iron is fun!

Boogity: Great pictures! Very impressive! I especially noted the dowels or allen screws that had been added to the ring gear/flywheel interface. The ring gear must have been slipping. When I split my tractor last month, I found that the ring gear had been welded to the fly wheel in three places. The welds were neat and about 1.5 inces long. The ring gear was actually placed a little forward on the flywheel such that there was some tooth deterioration where the starter bendix gear had worn into the forward side of the teeth.

What is remarkable is the craftmanship of either the farmers or the repair facilities that maintained these old Fergies. I suspect that these fixes were done many moons ago. Keep the photos coming and good luck, David, MI

Thanks. You know, many times I've thought about the men (and women) who worked so hard trying to eek out a living many years ago on the farm. Since I bought my little farm and have met some of the folks around there I've come to realize that they are the most "can-do" people I think I've ever met. They simply do whatever it takes to get the job done. And I certainly admire that.

I'll up date the photo album as time permits.
