I am trying to restore a TE-20 ferguson tractor.
Problem is tractor will start but only stays running for 30 seconds to a minute.
I suspect the carb may be causing a problem.
How do I verify this and what is the best way to
adjust these carburetors.
The carb is a MARVEL SCHEBLER,plate on side says TSX 104S.
I would appreciate any suggestions that anyone
might have.

if it runs better with the choke slightly on you may have installed the ventury in backwards, like i did on my 202, when reversed it does not create enough vacuum signal to draw enough fuel through the passages, burnt (blue) points can act that way also, good luck,Gregg

Some carbs have a strainer built into the 90 degree fitting that screws into the carb. Gently unscrew it and make sure it is clean. Use only fixed open end wrenches and not an adjustable. Scrounge up an extra flare fitting to fit in where the fuel line goes so you don't collapse. No strainer...., is there a plug in the bottom of the carb? If so pull and catch the gunk that comes out. No plug, bear in mind that carburator is a french word for do not touch!

Remove the carb, disassemble and soak in lacquer thinner. If you are real careful you can reuse the gaskets. Shake the float to see if it has taken on gas. Use only screw drivers that fit the screws, too small and you'll just chew up the slots. Gas evaporates to leave a varnish that will stick parts like fittings and screws.

Do not reassembe with teflon tape, little bits can carry downstream and plug passages. Anything that binds is either varnished or crossthreaded, assemble by hand at least three turns before reaching for the wrench.

It is common for gas tanks to have rust and dirt in them first make sure that the fuel flow is good to carb they are not very complicated and just taking off and cleaning the needle and seat might help a lot.

I have allready removed gas tank and cleaned it.
and yes it was very dirty.Fuel flow to sediment
bowl seems to be ok.I have removed carb also and
cleaned it as well.
I am not really sure how to adjust the carb or
whether or not I should even have too.

I have a TO 35 with basically the same problem. My tractor would run for just a few minutes and then just quit and now I cannot get it to crank at all. I have put new points in my tractor and will try putting a new coil on tommorrow. Is there a way to tell if a coil is any good. I have not taken my car. off but that all I know to do next if the coil doesn't fix the tractor. Please email me with any other ideas you might have on your tractor. I have considered rebulding my carb. the kit cost 28 dollars in the Stevens book. I don't have to have a beautiful tractor just one that cranks. My email address is l2p@aol.com

Keep the faith, Mike! I've been there, too. My TE20 used to quit at random times while working and my field solution was to take the fuel line loose at the carb and blow back through the line till I heard bubbles in the tank. A crude way of moving the rust flakes out of the fuel line and back into the tank! You didn;t mention whether you cleared the fuel line. After I installed an inline filter fron NAPA, the problems ceased. Hope you get it solved -- good luck!
