White smoke

Hi.About a year ago I started getting occasional puffs of white smoke out of the tail pipe. I mentioned it on the board and I got several different explanations. Well, over the last year it has gradually gotten worse until now it is a steady stream of smoke sometimes light, sometimes heavy. Being in the yard while I am working is like following a Dodge minivan down the highway. It also smokes a little out the breather pipe. Obviously I'm no mechanic and I need to know if am I risking further damage by running it. It runs great and I can tolerate smoke but I don't want to end up with any bigger a problem than I have. Three questions: What do you think is the problem? can I run it? And should a novice try to fix it? Thanks in advance for any response. VA

VA: Before you go tearing her apart, I'd suggest a couple of simple tests and a little sleuthing. Firstly, check for any obvious leaks, seeps and fluid mixing (radiator fluid in oil and oil in radiator fluid). Secondly do both a compression test and a radiator pressure test. There are forum posts on both of these. Do a search and read what has been communicated in the past. If you need detailed information about my suggestions, let me know. Good luck, David

The good news is no mosquitos when you're on the tractor. The bad news is likely head gasket leak. Smoke out breather (you didn't say what color that was) could be something else possibly not related, maybe rings (ugh). If you are going to replace head gasket, best to find out first if you need full rebuild as that might influence who who you want to do the job, etc.

I would stop running it right now and pull the head. May just need a new head gasket. You should get the head checked out too before you put it back together. A good engine rebuild shop can do that.
I think a novice can do the job, especialy if you have a handy friend to help. Two heads are better than one.
If you keep running it and it hydro-locks your engine will be good for a boat anchor and thats about it.
