Ok I have a TO-20 and it ran yesterday after having problems getting it started. I go out today and have the same problems getting it started (flooded) and after awhile I the starter hums loudly so I took out the starter and put power to it and it worked fine I put it back in the tractor and there goes the hum again. So would someone please let me know if the starter is just not working under a load or if i am going to have to rebuild a locked engine.

Clint: I am inclined to agree with Jim, though I might start by checking to see that you can turn the engine over (by hand or by rocking it in a high gear). If you can, you might see what boosting your battery does as far as the operation of the starter--you might have a charging system problem. If none of these are fruitful, I would have your starter checked out. If you cannot turn your engine over, this would suggest some "real" engine problems (water in oil, bearing failure, loss of oil, etc.). Keep us posted, David, MI

Try putting it in forth gear and rocking it by turning one of the rear tires. Watch the fan while you are doing this to see if the engine is turning. If it won't turn try pulling the plugs and trying it again. If it turns then watch for water coming out of the plug holes. If you see water, bad head or head gasket. If that checks out and I am guessing you still have a 6 volt system, make sure all your battery and cables are clean and tight,even the ground where it bolts to the tractor. If still no go get the starter checked out. It could be it won't turn or turns very slowly and needs rebuilt. Worn bushings in the starter can cause that.
