TO30 performance...the saga continues

When I last posted, my TO30 was running rough and lacking power. I thought it might need a tune-up, but also wondered if it might be a head gasket problem. Everybody said to start simple, so....
I disassembled the air filter and sediment bowl, and cleaned them out. No big dirt collections in either. The tractor still ran the same. Tune up parts aren't readily available in my area (apparently everybody but me has enough money to buy NEW tractors), so I mail ordered them. While awaiting delivery, I cleaned the points as best as I could, and reset the gap. No help. Then I checked out the spark plugs. All were extremely worn. Two were so carbon and crud-coated that I couldn't even see an electrode gap. I cleaned and regapped them. When I started the tractor, there was a noticeable improvement. I thought I had it solved, and would just put in the new parts when they arrived. But, after about 15 minutes, it started running just as poorly as it had before. In addition, I noticed what looked like oil, or unburned gas, leaking out of cylinder #3 around the plug threads. I thought maybe I cross-threaded it on reassembly, or didn't tighten it enough, so I took it out, cleaned it up again, and put it back in. There wasn't any noticeable wetness on the electrode; just coming out around the threads. The tractor ran fine again for a few minutes, then began stumbling. But there was nothing leaking this time. Throughout all this, the tractor is not blowing smoke of any kind; black, white, blue...nothing. I'm becoming concerned that with each "simple thing" that doesn't help, the chances increase that this is something serious. What are your thoughts out there? Is there still a possibility that once I get all the new tune up parts in, the problem might be fixed, or is this starting to sound like a major expense in the making? Thanks all.

Jim: Some of what you describe is perplexing and troublesome. Have you done a compression test--especially one with a screw-in type tester where you can see how rapidly pressure is lost? Secondly, have you done a cooling system pressure test? Here you want to be able to hold pressure with no leaks. These two tests will give you a lot of information without requiring any disassembly. From your description you need tune-up parts. I wonder if you might have a small crack in your cylinder head (I don't want to be pessimistic-but I don't know how you'd get fluid to seep around the spark plug threads unless the compression washer on the spark pulgs was so deformed or missing). Another thought is have you attempted to retorque your cylinder head bolts? Other thoughts that Ray and Bill have put forth are very possible. Keep us posted and good luck, David, MI

JIM,
in my opinion your engine is full of carbon.
it needs the top end cleaned out. this can
be done by removing the head. there are
some other ways that may work. one is to
mix alcohol, and water, and let this enter
the carburetor, after the engine is hot,
and running at the fastest speed. there are
some other things that can be had at your
local auto parts store. talk to them, and
let them know what your problem is, they
may be able to help you.

Again I agree with William. You can make a fixture to run Gumout through the fuel system. Warm up engine first, remove the fuel line at the sediment bowl to the carb and push one end of tubing(tight) over it. Insert a small funnel in other end of the tubing, start tractor and run at 3/4 throttle, pour liquid Gumout in funnel until gone and tractor dies from lack of fuel Reconnect fuel line and let sit overnight, next morning start tractor and run for 15 min.minimum. This will clean the entire fuel system, valves and combustion chambers.Gumout sold a fixture to do this for autos,40 years ago, it just screwed into the carb. fuel line port and the gumout can screwed upside down into the fixture. If you hesitate to perform this proceedure, drain tank and pour 1 bottle Gumout into about 1/2 gallon of gas in fuel tank, remember to open the gas valve on sediment bowl completely to access the reserve gas in tank. Then run until out of gas. Tuneup parts are sold at NAPA and Carquest stores here.Keep us posted on results.
