Hi all: Anyone had experience with transmission repairs?? I had my tractor split replacing seals and leaking gaskets... When I removed the counter shaft retainer (to replace the gasket) I found that there is spawling/pitting on the bearing race and the rollers on the bearing. In a perfect world, both parts should be replaced. Can this be done without splitting the tractor between the rear axle and the rear of the transmission and disassembling the transmission? If so how do you remove the bearing from the counter shaft and install a new one without removing the counter shaft or damaging it in the process (which would require disassembly of the transmision)? Should I just put it back together and do the transmission at another time? Your prompt reply would be greatly appreciated, David, MI

Dave

Where did you find the front seal? I have tried several places with no luck.

Neal

Neal: Hi. If we are talking about the same seal (front transmission--main shaft, just ahead (forward) of the front bearing retainer (long cast piece that holds the release bearing at the forward end)... My local M-F dealer was able to order it. If you need a part number, let me know. The transmission section of both the parts book and the shop repair manuals are pretty skimpy (in my opinion). I'll be splitting my TO-20 again to delve into the transmission bearings...Would you send me your e-mail address, as I have gone a couple of times to contact you and have be unable to find the info? Thanks and good luck, David, MI

The adjustment shims are on the opposite end you are looking at, plus the opposite end may not be in good shape also. Bearings are much less expensive than gears so I would pull it apart and put the bearings in. Probably do the input and out put shafts also.

Duner: Hi. I agree completely. I made the decision to fix the transmission leaks (that's why I was in there in the first place) and put it back together. I'll have to split it again later to tackle going through the whole transmission. I did most of the re-assembly last night--just have to install the starter and hook up the exhaust and I should be rolling (and mowing) later today. Thanks again for the advice, David, MI
