Having read a post by Tex last week regarding how to set the timming on a TE20 I set about looking for the timming mark on my TED20 which requires a tune up. Tex said to look out for a mark stamped "30", I can not seem to find any such mark on my TED20, what I do find (roughly where the rotar arm points to number 1 cylinder) is a hole in the flywheel. It is definatley a hole since I can poke a small screw driver into it and prevent the engine being rotated. Is this the mark Iam looking for? and if so what does it represent and how do I set the timming using it.
Also the contact on the rotar arm that makes contact with the distibutar cap is so long I can not work out when the ignition would spark, eg would it be when the contact on the rotar arm initially made contact with the cap or when that that contact was broken, eg when rotar arm passed the cap contact.
Sorry for the lengh,
I would be extreamly greatful for some quick responses.
Thanks
Pete.

Pete, I have a TEA20 and I ran into the same type of problem. The flywheel has 4 holes in it (If you were to look at the face of a clock, the holes would be at the 12,3,6,9 positions)What I found is when the rotor on the distributer was at the #1 cylinder postion, I would be at top dead center. I could confirm this by taking a small bright focused flashlight and I could plug the plug for the number one cylinder and watch the cylinder come up and go down. I would have a friend grab on to the fan belt with heavy gloves and turn the motor. I can't remember if I checked this but I do believe if you were to line up the other holes on the flywheel you would be at top dead center on one of the other cylinders. Anyway... that's what I found on my tractor. Let us know how you make out.

Since writting the last meesage I have discoverd that there are in fact four of the holes in the flywheal each 90 degrees apart so they are obviously not the timming marks. Still can't find the proper timing marks however, any advice?
Thank
Pete

Pete: Hi. According to my shop manual, the TE-20 has no inspection hole or marks on the flywheel. Instead they are on the timing gear cover and the crankshaft pulley. But...the manual says that these marks are not accessible for a timing light. There is a procedure described to make a permanent mark that can be seen by a timing light. So look at the front of your engine and let me know whether you'd like me to fax you a page from the manual. Good luck, David, MI

Pete: Thanks for the confirmation. My fax machine suggested that nothing had gone through. I am pleased that you found the information helpful. I would encourage that you purchase a shop manual. The one I have covers the TO-20, TE-20 and the TO-30. It cost about $30 (U.S.). They are readily available. I hope you get your Fergie successfully timed. David, MI
