Looking for water leak?

I've got a TE20 with water leaking into the oil. The tractor has been sitting in the field for "five" years. I bought the tractor from a local mechanic who repalced the crankshaft and rebuilt the transmission. I've got watre in the oil and went down to see him today. He suggested doing a pressue test on the water system to try and find where it's leaking. There is crack on the number four cylinder that has a weld patch on it. Before taking the engine out I would sure like to know where it's leaking! I'm looking for any suggestions of what to check, or how to do a pressure test.

Thanks in advance,
George

George: Your mechanic (in my opinion) was right on! A cooling system pressure test will help narrow the leak down--probably 3 possibilities: The head gasket (hope for this one), a crack in the block or a crack at the weld repair (failed weld). To do the pressure test, you will need a pressure testing kit (Stant makes one and is available through Murray's Auto store)--try your local auto parts stores. The kit comes with an adaptor that fits on the rad filler neck. The adaptor has a pressure pump (hand pump) and a pressure gauge. Pump the pressure to 10-15 psi and if there are no leaks that pressure should hold. You can tell a big leak from a small one by how quickly you lose pressure. Assuming you are losing pressure, pressurize the system and look and listen for leaks. Hope this helps, David, MI

Remove the oil pan and look up to find out where the water is coming from before you do anything else. Lots of times this will save you a lot of trouble trying to find where it was coming from.

I have a TO 20 Ferguson and it was frozen and broke between each sleeve at the bottom of the block. I patched it by driving leak into the cracks after removing the sleeves. I reinstalled the same sleeves and put in some Bars leak and it has never had water in the oil again. That was 35 years ago. I have never allowed it to be out of coolant though for fear it might dry out and leak again.

Thanks David and Zane, What is "driving leak into the cracks" and what is Bars leak? You'll have to excuse my ignorance this is my first tractor. I went by to see the fellow I bought it from last night and he came out here this morning to look at it. Besides (or becasue of) the weld on numbre four cyl. he noticed the sleeve for number 4 is about 5 - 10 thousand below the top of the block. I'm going to call the local Massey-Freguson dealer and get a shim for the sleeve. He's promised to help me put the shim, sleve and piston back in as soon as I get the part. Nice guy!!!

Hi

Zane ment to say drive lead into the crack.
Bars leak is a name brand like stop leak it can and does help stop coolant leaks.
