Revealing the Serial number on a 20

Just bought a Fergy 2 something and would like to find out exactly what I have got but unfortunately the serial number plate has been heavily painted over (probably several times). I cannot even tell if the numbers are stamped into the plate or are just printed onto it. Will I destroy the number if I attempt to scrape the paint off ?

Incidentally, I am in New Zealand where Fergusons were sold as either a Model 24 or 28. I have not seen these numbers mentioned in these pages. Anybody know how they relate to the TE and TO models ?

The tractor goes really well and will continue life pulling my boat.

Further to my previous post, I believe that the reference to 24's and 28's is a reference to horsepower. The earlier Continental engined Fergis only developed 23.9 horsepower, hence the reference to 24's. Later Standard engined models with an 85mm bore developed 28.2 hp.

I've found that gentle application of a little paint stripper with a fine artists paint brush, to the bottom of the ID plate will lift off the old paint and reveal the s/number. A total of 17,190 Ferguson TE tractors were exported as knock down kits to New Zealand, and differed only from their U.K., counterparts by having a blue stripe around the bonnet and a bonnet badge on each side, at the rear of the bonnet. TE as you'll probably know, means tractor England, ie built at Banner Lane, Coventry. TO means tractor overseas and refers to tractors built by the U.S. division of Ferguson, at Detroit. I dont think you will see any TOs in New Zealand. I dont know, but I suspect the model numbers 24 and 28 might refer to petrol and petrol/paraffin engined models. Someone else might be more knowledgable on this point. When you do find the s/no let me have it and I'll give you the year of manufacture. If you need any further help, just e-mail me.

Thanks Pete. I keep the tractor at my beach house (or "bach" as we call such a place in New Zealand). I only get to go there about monthly so am doing a bit of research before my next visit. Will let you know what it is after my next visit.
