When cutting lawn with a finishing morer, the
pto sometimes disengages.....it seems to have about half to 3/4 inch play on the shaft.
Is this easily fixed?

Replaced PTO seal last year on my F-40. Pulled shaft heard and felt a clunk. Shaft would not go all the way in after installing new seal. Removed side access covers and found a gear laying in the oil. I think the gear was the ground speed PTO gear. Slid it back onto the PTO shaft. Buttoned everything back up and it runs fine. Hope I did everything alright. Just passing on my experience.

Willy, My guess is the shaft has been replaced with the wrong one. There should be no movement in or out.
The shaft has a shrunk on collar to the inside that the bearing assembly seats on.
somthing like this: outer retainer-->]bearing[<-- inner shrunk collar

If the shaft is moving that much either the inner collar has moved or worn (not likely) Or the shaft is wrong. Pull it out, not a big job and see what is happening.

Lower the front end and drain the fluid into a CLEAN pan. The system holds 5 gallons but you will most likely get less than a couple out if you drive the front into a depression, but be prepared in case. There is a bulk head of a few inches between the rear axel housing and the pump housing.
Don't jack the rear end up unless you secure the front. The tractor will pivot on the front axle.
Accually its one of the easier jobs.

you mean side to side movement or in and out movement you can park tractor facing downhill or in a small ditch take four bolts out of pto retainer and pull shaft right out. There is a bearing on the end and a seal that can be taken off. I had mine pressed off and new seal and bearing all for 25.00 I think it was. IF it is internal wear then it becomes more complicated. IF you have no TEA manual a TE shop manual will show what you have to do to access the internal workings.

I have an F-40 and last year replaced the seal on the PTO shaft. When I pulled the shaft out I felt and heard a clunk. When I tried to replace the shaft it would not go in all the way. Removed side plates and found that a gear had come off the shaft. I think it was the PTO ground speed gear. Slid it back on and it has run fine since.

No gear like that in the TEA 20. If you have an F40 some folks are starting a registry on them check out my club for more info.
