Yeah, I know. But it's a lot better than the white smoke coming out before; along with the water in the oil. It appears the only thing wrong was a head gasket, but I'll know for sure tomorrow. I've got about three acres of overdue pasture that needs to be bush hogged. That should be a good test. BTW, the engine was tired before the head gasket blew, so the blue smoke is nothing new.

Now a question: My hydraulic system is low on oil and I really don't want to go into town to get some 90wt. Is there anything I can substitue to fill it up? I have some normal oil and some hydraulic fluid I use in my wood splitter. Next week, I plan on changing the fluid anyway.
Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

I appreciate your input, but it seems to be moot... After running her for about 1/2 hour, she started to sputter and die; checked oil; water in oil again. :-( Looks like time for a teardown and find the crack. Also had to put Zeus, our yellow lab to sleep yesterday, so all in all, it wasn't the best day I've ever had. I'll keep you posted on what I find.

Your smoke may be more than just wear.

I hate to tell you this but experience has shown me that antifreeze that runs down past the rings will seize up the rings in aluminum pistons. I had new rings on new pistons, antifreeze leaked by (don't ask why!!) and the rings corroded and stuck in the grooves. Had to re-ring after cleaning out the grooves.

I don't think I would put the hydraulic oil in there because it's not as heavy as the 90 wt oil. Why take the chance. Bushhoggin puts all these parts under strain anyway.

I'm in complete agreement with John. Unless you have a deep pocket, go to town and buy 8 gal. of 80w straight mineral oil for the trans/axle/hyd system. The pumps for the hyds,are going skyhigh(near $600); there's only so many around and none are being manufactured to my knowledge. I'm in the same place, MF85 with water in hyd system, takes 11 gal. to flush and refill each time. $50 for oil is cheap compared to pump cost. About the blue smoke, use only straight 30W motor oil in warm weather. Multi-weight oil is not adequate for these engines. That's my thoughts, Ray,IN
