Still no brakes

I STILL HAVE NO BRAKES ON MY TO 30 , STILL NOT CONVINCED I HAVE THE CORECT SHOES ,CAN ANYONE SEND A PICTURE OF THE SHOES TO ME .GOOD SHOES ,DRY NO OIL , CAN ONLY BE WRONG SHOES . DO THESE SHOES ONLY SUPPOSED TO MOVE ON ONE END AND PIVOT ON THE OTHER ? IF SOMETHING IS WORN DOWN CAUSING THIS WHERE DO I START LOOKING FOR WEAR,THERES NO PLAY IN BUSHINGS ON SHAFT .

Jimmy: Hi. I just replaced my axle seals this weekend. I installed one new set of brake shoes and tried to clean up the oil-soaked set on the other axle. The new side stops fine, the other just doesn't do it. I will install a new pair on the other side (tonight). I went back and read some of your earlier posts and I think you tried to degrease the old shoes. I suspect this will not work and you'll have to get new shoes. Your M-F dealer should be able to get these for you ( I can get you the part number if you want). The shoes are the same either side, and top or bottom shoe. The "primary shoe" is the lower one on both sides and should be fitted with the blue return spring. The "secondary shoe" is the upper on both sides and should be fitted with the black return spring. Make sure that all your linkage moves freely-especially the exposed cam and rotating linkage where the brake shafts are bushed into the side of the tractor. Lube all the brake shoe contact surfaces--backing plate contacts, brake shaft cam lobes, star adjustment wheel threads, etc. Install the new shoes with the star wheel adjusters backed-off. Degrease (again) the brake drums. Install the drums and then adjust the star wheels until the brake drum just locks-up. Back the adjuters off on each side until the brake shoes do not drag (about 3-6 notches on the star wheel). Now go back and make sure that the dual brake works and that the single brakes work. Adjust the linkage between the brake shaft cam and the front shaft and linkage, if necessary. You're ready to put your rear wheels back on and take your TO-30 for a test run--re-adjust after your test run. You may want to search the archives for additional information about the braking system--there are quite a few old posts. Good luck and keep us posted, David (in Michigan)

if you had oil on your brake shoes at one time throw them away. check the axle seals and bearings. i just replaced all of the above on my to 30. if all is well you may just need to adjust them. just like a car.
