I posted a message last week about my 30's engine missing when it got up to temp and it's grown into a bigger issue. On Dennis' advice I replaced the condenser and coil (found it still had a 6v coil on a system converted to 12v) but it didn't solve the problem. On much closer inspection, it seems I have water in my oil. Blown head gasket? Worse? I guess my question is what's the best way to determine if it's the head gasket and if so, how difficult a project is it for someone with good common sense but not a ton of engine repair background? I love this tractor and need to keep mowing! Thanks in advance for your help.

Glenn: Hi. Hopefully your water in the oil is the lesser of all evils. In my experience, a cooling system pressure test and a compression check are the two tests that help diagnose the type of problem you describe. With the cooling system pressure check, attach the pressure tester at the radiator filler neck and pump the tester to a pressure of 10-15 psi. If the system has no leaks, it should hold pressure. If it does not hold pressure, as will probably be the case for you, pressurize and visualize for where the leak is located. If you see bubbling or hear a hiss around the head gasket area, then your leak has likely been caused by a bad head gasket. I hope this is helpful. Keep us posted and good luck, David (in Michigan)

Probably warped head. Remove gas tank, drain fluids and pull head. Put a straight edge (carpenters square) and try a feelier gauge between 2+3. Have the head squared if there is any doubt. Check between the cylinders for cracks. Pull the pan and meticulously clean out any antifreeze.

Reassemble, rig up a fish scale and cheater for the head bolts you can't get a torque wrench on. Set valves loose, run for 30-45 minutes, let cool and retorque head. Set valves for last time. (make sure push rods go back in the same holes.)

good advice. I'd add one more thing though, to check ALL block AND head surfaces for cracks. The continental is famous for cracking between the cylinders but that's not to say there isn't another crack somewhere else on the block or head.

So why do these Continental engines crack between cylinders?

Most of the Fergusons came without temp gauges. Is this an engine that is just prone to overheating sureptetiously (without steam blowing out of the radiator). Should I run out and get a temp gauge?

I've never heard a good explanation of why they crack between cyls. I suspect it's because of the small area between cylinders and the fact that it has sleeved cylinders that are pressed in. I think the pressing causes outward stresses in that area.

If the engine overheats, it will boil out the radiator. It has to - no place else to go. I don't have a temp guage on my to30. Never seems to get hot. Probably a good idea to get one someday.

I believe the comment is pertaining to wet sleeves, and that rubber o rings are used to seal the sleeves. My Dad had a 30 that he used to mow hay, it let go a radiator hose and he finished the lap around the field. The engine got hot enough to melt the spark plug boots. Warped the head, but did not crack the block or hurt the rings. We planed the head flat and used it for a number of years. Never had any oil pressure at idle and 5 psi wide open. Used it on the silo blower for hours at a time.

Opinion, yes they should have a water gauge, but it should be tapped into the block, preferably at the back of the engine. The back cylinders run the hottest, and thats where trouble starts.

Just wanted to thank you for the discussion. I hope this means that the crack I found around the back #4 cyl. is the only one I will find.

Gotta Run going out right now to check my head with the sqaure and feeler gauge.
