HELLO IVE DONE ALL BUT REPLACED THE BRAKES ON MY TRACTOR . BOTH SEALS WERE LEAKING BUT NOW IVE CLEANED UP EVERYTHING RUFFED UP THE SHOES AND DRUMS CLEANED WITH GOOD BRAKE CLEANER AND RUFFED UP AGAIN AND CHECKED LINKAGE ALL IS WORKING I CAN LOCK UP THE WHEEL BY HAND WITH THE TRACTOR OFF THE GROUND BUT ONLY SLOWS THE TRACTOR A LITTLE WHEN MOVING ,DOES ANYONE HAVE A PICTURE OF THESE SHOES i may have the wrong shoes ,something doesnt look exactly right suggestions are appreciated thanks

You should be able to lock the brakes, even on a hard surface. Adjust both sides until they just turn freely,(ie the same number of clicks from too tight to turn). Jack up and block both wheels; using light pressure apply each wheel brake until the drum is hot to touch. Allow to cool and readjust both sides. In loose dirt or stone, adjust the linkage to the master brake pedal to make both sides apply at the same time. This procedure will provide good braking unless, like you say the wrong shoes have been installed. I don't have a picture, however insure the longer shoe is to the front of the tractor. The H.Ferguson TO series brakes are nearly identical to those of autos from the 50's era, only mechanical. I hope I've helped, Ray,IN

Hi there!

Although all looks well with the shoes I'd bet that the shoes are still "SOAKED" with oil! When you apply the brakes with the tractor off of the ground you're only stopping the weight of the wheel assembly. With the tractor on the ground you now have to stop the weight of the whole vehicle... Which just ain't gonna happen! As you attempt to stop the tractor the braking energy is changed to heat which causes still more oil to come out of the brake shoes. no matter how much you've cleaned them you'll never get all of the oil out. My bet is that you'll be changing your brake shoes soon...
