Steering box oil/grease

Can the oil in the steering box on a TE20 be replaced with grease to prevent oil leakage. I have been told so and are for ever cleaning leaking steering box oil of my tractor. Thanks

I read on another forum were someone bought an old Ford, and was having a TERRIBLE time steering the tractor. He torn down the steering box, and found that the previous owner had filled it with grease, but there were voids in the grease and the bearing were all but seized up. Cost him time and money to rebuild the steering box, correctly using gear grease (80W). Forget using chassis grease.

John, I just did mine yesterday. I was going to drill and tap a zrek fitting into the housing and just grease the pinion. But I elected to change the seals instead. You can order them from a massey dealer or get them from a bearing shop, about $8.00 bucks a piece.
The bronze bushings were ok and did not need replacing. I can't remember the National seal #.
A bit of a pain because of taking the dash apart to lift the steering box. Knocking out the seals is no problem. Measure them and order new. They will be neoprene not leathers and will not have the outer flange that the original has but they work. I think the measurement from memory were 1 7/8" outer X 1 5/16th inner for A 1 1/4" arm shaft. Added 120w oil in place of the 90w. Fill to just below the seal. The sectors will dip into the oil at that level and lube OK.
I HATE LEAKS!!
