I installed a water temp guage on my 1951 TO-30. No matter how long I run the tractor, the water temp hand does not move very much. Could I have the wrong type of cap on the radiator? Is the radiator pressure or non-pressure type?

Hi Wayne

My TO20 had the same problem, the temp gauge would not get above 110 deg f.Long story short version the tractor had no thermostat.The thermostat is located in the upper radiator hose closer to the engine than the radiator.Your thermostat may be stuck open or missing.If you install a new one drill a 1/16 th hole in the thermostat lip to let some water bypass.I put two holes in my thermostat to bypass h2o because TO20s and 30s have a reputation for cracking the block on an over temp condition. Wayne, you may not have a thermostat installed in your tractor. The TO-30 utilizes one that fits inside the upper radiator hose. That could account for the fact that the temperature does not rise much when the engine is running.
