TED 20 Stiff Gearbox

I noticed that my TED20 will not freewheel, as if the brakes were sticking, but they are not. I jacked up the back wheels, jammed the clutch pedal fully down, and turned both the back wheels by hand, The results were:- In neutral - easy to rotate, same with the PTO engaged. In 4th gear - very stiff to rotate. 1,2,3 gears - impossible to rotate by hand. Also gears 1 and 2 are a bit tricky to engage but not too seriously. Any help would be gratefully received.

Jon: Sorry, I missed this one the other day. Some details may be lacking about your attempts to freewheel, but it sounds like either the clutch needs adjustment, is frozen to the flywheel (your neutral test does not suggest this) or worse clutch replacement is in order. Try adjusting the clutch first to see if you can obtain/reduce free play (3/16 inches at the pedal stop). Or, maybe I should ask how your clutch pedal feels through the full pedal travel range? Being hard to turn in gear with the rear wheels does not mean you have a problem in the gear box. The mechanical advantage of the driveline makes it awful hard to rotate. If I were trying to see about the freewheel I would start with tire pressure then move to the front axle and check toe in. if you would be scrubing the front you could loosing momentem there. A good give away would be stiffness to steer or the wheel being taken away from you in a turn. Also check the wheel brgs. You could have a front or a rear out. on the rear when you jack it up you may be relieveing the interference with the brake drum. thus relieving the drag. If all is well outside it will mean going in.
