TO 20 oil return pipe

While putting the oil pump back in, I noticed that the return pipe that the oil filter slides up on has a small return hole for the oil to pass thru the filter from the inside out. Now, two questions: 1. How big should this hole be? Mine is the size of a lead pencil lead. 2. Has anybody attempted to "repipe" the suction line going to the oil pump to force 100% of the oil going to the oil pump to go thru the filter?

Fred, I added an external spin on oil filter to my To-20 and did some work on the oil pump and the main bearing cap it bolts to so after the pump picks up the oil from the pan it all goes to the filter before going back through the engine. I did this about 10 years ago and it has worked great. The old plate under the oil filter always leaked so I brazed it solid to the oil pan. No more leaks. I drilled and taped 2 holes through the block to route the oil lines out to the external filter and then back inside the crankcase. It's been so long since I did this that I have just about forgotten what everything looks like inside but I remember tapping and pluging the oil outlet from the pump and bringing a line out from the side of the pump. After going through the filter the line went back into the main bearing cap. I wish I had of taken pictures as this may not be exactly the way it was. It added about a quart of oil capacity and made changing the oil filter much easier. Kinda spooky though when you start drilling holes in the engine block. Sure don't want to do this if you want to keep one all original. I have some pictures of the outside part of all of this if you want I can e-mail them.

The hole is small. I don't think messing with something that has worked for fifty years needs re-engineered
