TO-20 Brake Drum Dust Seals

Hi all: I was doing some maintenance on my '49 TO-20 over the weekend and discovered that I needed to replace the brake shoes on one axle. As I was inspecting things, I realized that there was a felt dust seal on the brake backing plate. I checked with the local M-F dealer and the parts book shows this dust seal, but it is no longer available. Is this dust seal necessary? Has anyone found a suitable replacement? Thanks in advance for your help, David (in Michigan)

It was felt. about 3/8 thick. if you have not removed them don't. check rear axle play and tighten to specs. this will lower the drum into the grove a little and will be ok. if you are using the unit for just tinkering don't worry it will be a long time till it causes any problem.

Bobby: Thanks for the reply. I have not removed the felt dust seals, but more than 50% of the seal had fallen off each side. Are you aware of a source for replacement dust seals? If I adjust axle play (if necessary) and remove what remains of the dust seals, will this create problems? I use my tractor primarily for mowing, blading (mostly snow) and some hauling (trailer). Thanks, David

No it will not cause problems unless you were to run in extreme wet conditions and then you may experience some loss of brake effectiveness. there are many out there without the seals. The felt is about the same as a door seal from a good hardware store. something like a draft seal for a door may work just trim, it is not a crutial fit.
