On this 1949 TE20 it has a shift lever on the side which has three positions up middle and down. It is a long lever with aluminiun shifter ball. Can anyone tell me what this is for sure?

Hi Brian mmmm you have what I would like to have on my TEA-20. It is a Sherman auxiliary transmission. On lower position it is normal
Motor to transmission ratio 1 to 1. on middle
position it is neutral the tractor will not move
at the up position it is an overdrive the tractor will go faster. Now there is a fourth position unknown to many Fergy owners: if you put the lever in middle position (neutral) push the lever to the right and then up this is low position. "WARNING"
IF YOU DO THAT BE VERY GENTLE DO NOT FORCE THE LEVER IN ANY WAY BECAUSE THIS UNIT IS SENSITIVE TO LOCKUP.. IF LOCKED UP YOU WILL HAVE TO SPLIT THE TRACTOR OPEN THE UNIT TO UNLOCK THE FORK LEVER..
many Fergy owners had this bad experience..
Your are lucky man because not every Fergy is equipped with this unit. It gives you 12 speeds forward and 3 speeds reverse, my TEA-20 has only 4 forward and 1 reverse.

Hope this will help Pse give me feedback
Joe
