Hey Guys,

My TO30 brakes won't hold me on the hills. Is there an ajustment or do I need to do a brake job?

To add to what Ray said I would suggest you make sure the oil is not still getting onto the shoes before you just clean and reassemble. Is there oil on the inside on the tires? It is not to big a job to put new oil seals on the axles once you have the tires and drums off. I think they make a seal called the sure seal for the 30. You pack your bearings with wheel bearing grease and install the sure seal. I think you would have to install new bearings if you used the OEM seal. At least I couldn't get them apart without destroying them. If you go with the sure seals let us know and we will tell you how to install them. I think you can buy the sure seals from one of the links on this site or Central Tractor or Quality Farm and Fleet.
I hope you can find them on this site as I don't like to support those two stores.

Correction! I was wrong about the rear axle seals on a TO-30. They are different than a 20. And easier to replace. You don't use sure seals on a 30. The seals are in the axle housing like a car or truck and you can get at them just by pulling the axle. Your Massey Ferguson dealer may have them or can get them for you.
There are a few things different on a TO-30 even though they look like a 20. I should haved checked the manual.

At the Massy Ferguson deiler neer me thy want 35.00 for a manual. I took a quick look at it and noticed that it only showed a breakdown of parts and part numbers with pictures . It did'nt give directions for specific repair projects. Is this normal? Is it the right manual? It was only about a quater inch thick. Someone offered me the FE2 service manual, is this the one I need?

You should get the owners manual for a TO30; form no.Z-3481-C. It will explain exactly how to change the axle grease seal, and repack the bearing. If the bearing retainer nuts are tightened without checking axle end play, the axle ends may rub and cause a problem. The owners manual will cover all this, it's well worth the money.

The brake adj. is identical to a auto. with manual adjustment star wheels. The linkage should be adjusted after the brakes to stop both wheels at the same time. If your brake shoes are oil soaked no adjustment will compensate for it. Oil may be removed by using liquid brake cleaner and lots of scrubbing, the spray works for removing surface oil/dirt, but soaking in the liquid is the best to remove the deep down oil. I did all this, and the shoes are still working after 12 years; and I can slide both wheels in a straight line in gravel, or on blacktop. Visit your local MF dealer and buy yourself a owners manual, you'll be glad you did.
