TE20 Brake Safety Latch

On my TE20 there is a brake safety latch. It is down on the brake petal. It is a small flip latch that catches on stationary teeth. You press down on the brake petal with your right foot then lean down and flip the latch up with your right hand. I was wondering if this is the original set up? This is really hard to do if you are stopped on a hill and need to set the brake, with the latch being right next to the inside of your right foot, and trying to keep presure on the brake petal and set the latch is almost impossible without losing ground. Am I missing something? Thanks for any help.

Latter model TE tractors and the 35 series were fitted with a spring mechanism where you flipped it up and it then stayed up and you could stand on the pedal as hard as you like and it will ratchet down through the stationary teeth. when you wished to release it you flipped it down and then stand on the pedal a bit harder and it would spring out of engaugement. It is a much better system then the original. The only drama with converting is you have to drill a small hole in the pedal for the spring. You need to find another tractor with this system and find the exact location of the hole.

don't know about the TE20 but the TO30 has the same thing. I think they're all alike.

My TO-20 has the same thing. Frankly I don't particularly trust it. If I leave it on a hill I turn off the engine and put it in gear. I had it roll away from me once. Jumping onto a rolling tractor to keep from crashing throught my neighbors fence was no fun.
