Sooty plugs

I think I have about 15 hours on my current set of plugs. I pulled them out of boredom and found them covered with a dry black soot that comes off with wd sandpaper.

The tractor runs a hair rough cold but otherwise works well.It may bog down a bit if you suddenly open the throttle.I think the carb may be a bit rich. Not being very mechanical I have always considered carb adjustment a bit like sin. The more you do it the more trouble you get into.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your replies. I will change the oil in the filter as I think I just threw in whatever was at hand.

If that doesn't work I will tweak the carb a hair.

adjusting the carb isn't difficult. If you're worried, turn the adjuster in til it just bottoms, counting the turns so you can turn it out the same and get back to where you are if you mess it up.

Otherwise, get the unit warm, turn in the adjusting screw slowly until the engine just starts to miss and then back off about 1/4 turn. It should purr.

Frank,
Just a thought, but is the air cleaner unclogged
and the right grade oil in the cup for the temperature. Maybe try disconnecting the hose clamp at the carb to see if it runs better without the air cleaner connected. Could be starved for air and running rich. You might feel better eliminating that before you adjust the carb.
Just a thought.

if it smokes black when you throttle up go ahead and adjust the high speed needle. You might also see about running a little hotter spark plug.
