Hey Guys,

My 1952 TO30 failed me today. Every time I try to climb hills or move a bucket load of wood the tractor seems to load up on fuel and stall. After a few minuts it will restart but won't stay running long. I have to give it a little choke to make it fire, even when its warm. Once it restarts it blows out black smoke and seems to clear heself out but once I get underway it only goes about 40 yards and does the same thing again. Help!!!!

Thanks Mike

Sounds like it is starved for fuel. Check the screen in the sediment bowl and also make sure the fuel is coming down out of the tank. Sometimes the tube inside the tank plugs up with rust and stops or slows the fuel from coming down into the sediment bowl. You should have a good stream of fuel coming out. Also some carburators have a small filter where the fuel lines attaches to he carb. Not very many do though. A lot of people take them out and never replace them. Not sure if the TO-30 ever had one there. I would bet your problem is a plugged up line in the tank.

Hey Jim, Thanks for the reply. I've only had the tractor for 4 days, and the guy who owned it before me put a new shutoff valve on the bottom of the tanks and installed an in-line filter. In order to check the screen in the sediment bowl, do I have to remove it from the bottom of the carberator? If so, am I going to need a new gasket when I reinstall it? Thanks, Mike

I have a TO-20 and I had went out to mow today I wound up mowing about 15 ft. and my tractor did the same thing you described so I removed the sediment bowl and there are 2 gaskets in there one above the screen and one below the are 2inch gaskets anyway clean the bowl and the screen real good and if the gaskets are too old the will fall apart in your hand like mine did so i have two on order right now so basically my mowing is on hold until my gaskets come in. Hope I helped you

Take the fuel line off at the carb and allow some fuel to run into a catch can. If it starts to slow, you have a sediment problem either in the sediment bowl or most likely in the fuel tank. If the bowl is clean you will find dirt or insects in the draw pipe in the tank. to service you must unscrew the unit from the tank. run a wire into the 2 draw tubes and you will find your problem. If the fuel runs out of the line you probably have a high speed idle circuit problem. lots of times when rebuilt the venturi jet gets installed without a seal. This then lets raw fuel be drawn into the air stream over-fueling the engine.
