First of all--Thanks to all who have helped me out in the past-I am in your debt. Now I have a new question. I was running my TO30 today-pulling some logs, box blading, etc. and toward the end of the day, it started popping from the exhaust. Not real steady, but a popping sound. The motor seems to be running smoothly, and there seems to be no loss of power. Any ideas? Timing? Muffler? As always I am grateful for your help.

Look to your fuel system for the cause. Assure yourself that there is no water in the system. I say this because water that is settled in a low spot will tent to stay there until disturbed enough to be pushed on through the carb. An often overlooked place for water and sediment to accumulate is the reserve side within the gas tank. The stock fuel shutoff is made to hold back approx. 1gal. in reserve. Opening the fuel shutoff 2 full turns allows normal usage, opening the valve completly allows access to the last gal.(reserve). The owners manual recommends operating with the valve completely open for a min. on 1hr. each day. Clean the sediment bowl often to prevent comtamination from getting to the carb. and fowling up the jets and orfices. I mix carb/fuel system cleaner into the gas tank about 1 a month to minimize the formation of varnish and to keep the entire system clean; the gas we get today will not keep as long without forming varnish. When I am not using my tractor for extended periods I use Sta-bil gasoline preservitive for the same reason. This may not be your problem, but it's worth investigating.

Ray, I think you are right. The problem has gotten progressively worse and now will only run with the choke fully out. I have cleaned the sediment bowl, but not fully opened the valve. I will check out the gas reserve for water, etc. This problem has gotten a little worse each time I run the tractor, so I think you are right about the fuel. Also, I will put in some carb. cleaner once I ge the junk out of the tank. I really appreciate your help.

I think most of the problems are solved now. I cleaned out the air cleaner--it was full of junk, put fresh oil in the cleaner and then did the recommended adjustment to the carb. It started right off and ran all day without using the choke. There is still a little popping, but I am going to investigate the gas line and tank to see if there might be rust, dirt, etc. Guys, I really appreciate all the help and advice. Stay tuned, cause I have only just begun!
