I'm trying to wire up the headlights on my '56 TO35. Anybody got a wiring diagram showing how lights were originally wired in? Nothing in any of my manuals.

I think the correct hookup to a three terminal ignition switch is to have a wire from the "L" terminal go to the lights. Be sure the light fixtures are well grounded. The "I" terminal should connect with the starter button. The third terminal should connect with the "L" terminal on the voltage regulator.

All the diagrams I have show a empty terminal on the ignition switch(I assume this is where the lights are hooked up to), I recently replaced the switch on mine(there was an el-cheapo car type on it)with a replacement from Massey, my tractor never had lights, so I mounted a set of driving lights with 6 volt bulbs on my loader, and wired them into the "headlight" teminal on the switch, the new switch has 3 positions, on, on with lights, and just lights(if yours has the key out/ignition off position, two ignition on,ans another off position in that order, it is probably the same), I have mine wired so that the key has to be on to start it(My neutral saftey switch is unuseable, and this is the best thing I could think of)

I put new switch on yesterday (old one was a 3-position toggle). New switch has 4 positions and 3 terminals (ignition, battery and lights).

I have a hot wire hooked to the switch light terminal and running up to front of tractor. It "y's" with one lead going to each headlight. Upon disassembly, one light (left) had another wire connected to housing (negative), and the right headlight only had the positive wire coming to it.

When I put in new wiring, I didn't put a "neg" wire on the right light. I now realize that I need to.

But, when I plugged up the left side (with pos and neg wires), it immediately killed the engine. I should mention that this happened with switch in "run"/"lights" position.

Will adding the ground wire to the right lamp cure this?

Is your tractor positive or negative ground? It seems to me that you ended up with a dead short when you hooked up the left light, you must have hooked up the wrong wire,or the light is shorted internally, if you can, remove the ground wire from the left light, as you shouldn't need it, unless your hood is made of some non-conductive material, if the right light wasn't lighting up, the paint on the base, and where the base hits the hood will have to be removed(some grease under the base will help prevent rust),once that is finished, paint the hood and lights as an assembly, so as not to ruin the ground.
