Stubborn diesel?

I have just rebuilt my FE 35 (with a 23C Standard Diesel-4 cylinder) and it is still very hard to start unless I use ether. I get a lot of whitish smoke and it runs real rough for about a minute, then when it clears, it purrs like a kitten with nary a whiff of smoke (at any revs!)It goes perfectly except for startup...Runs about 130 degrees, perfect oil pressure, great compression... you name it!
What in the blazes is going on ? Ive got some literature that suggests I advance the timing chain one link and the readjust it at the injector pump ? any advice ? I'm stumped !

Just rebuild my 23c also same promblem. oil pressure great compression good but hard to start use a little starting fluid to get her going , got an intake heater but don't have it hooked up yet am hoping this will help will let ya know. we need to start a club of us with these 23c's seem like they all don't like to start but she runs good after she is fired off.

I have a T0-35 Standard 23C. Starting is a problem. The minute my gets started....purrs. I pulled the engine down and have been going through the head, injectors, and injector pump. I had some injector problems. Have you guys tried the 9 timing technique on your tractors? Number 1 opens...adjust number 8, 2 opens adjust number 7, etc. Seems logical, just wondered if you have tried it.

Hello John -

That's the nature of the beast. Great engine, but hard to start - even if the intake manifold heater (or glow plugs on the later model) are working well.

The hard starting is probably one of the main reasons Massey changed to Perkins engines about 1959.

A 200 or 300 watt block heater installed in the lower rad hose helps a lot. 15 min in summer, an hour in winter.

I would not recommend changing the timing.

I have a te-20 diesel, and that doesn't start too well, but if you put Easy Start (don't know if you can buy this in America), spray some in the air intake pipe, turn the compression off, then run it for a few seconds, put the compresion back, and it will start easily. This should heat up the engine nicely to stop it running badly when started.
