Polarizing generator on Ferguson TE20

I have to replace the voltage regulator on my Ferguson TE20. I understand that I then need to polarize the generator. To do that, I need to know whether the generator field is internally or externally grounded, since the procedure for the polarizing depends on that. This tractor has the Lucas electrical system, 6 volt. Does anyone know whether the field on this generator is externally or internally grounded?

My tractor is wired as positive-earth, as you say it shoud be, but I have one further question. Both of the terminals on my generator appear to be of the same size or very close to the same size, so I don't know which one to use for the procedure, should it be the ARM/GEN terminal or the FIELD terminal? They are not labelled, but I can check continuity to the markings on the voltage regulator terminasl to determine which one to use, I just cannot tell by the size. Thanks for your earlier reply.

You want the Armiture Terminal. Should have an A next to it.

I have heard conflicting statements about this. Can anyone tell me why a tractor would run better being earthed as it was originally as opposed to the reverse?

When I bought my TED20 it was set up with the negative terminal as Earth. Since it is not charging anyway (so I need to look at the wiring, generator, etc) I am considering putting it back to positive Earth... but is there really any compelling reason to do so?

The tractor should be wired positive ground. "wipe" a length of wire onto the negative terminal of the battery a couple of times while holding the other end onto the large terminal on the Generator, and that is it.
I have told you how it should be done if it is wired as it was made, if you have changed it around for some reason to negative ground, then the battery terminals will be reversed, but you should find the tractor runs better how it was made. Make sure that the power lead to the coil is attached to the correct terminal. Move the ground lead from the back of the dash panel onto one of the bolts in the area of the starter, use very heavy cable, thin stuff as on a car or truck is no use, far too light and will not help it to start...John
