I'm at my wits end!
Like many TO tractors, my hydraulic lift contol (draft control) hasn't been maintained properly and the yoke is frozen to the lift spring control plunger. I have removed the entire Hyd Lift Control Cover from the tractor. I have soaked the assembly in PB blaster daily for a week and used a cheater bar but still no luck. I am afraid if I apply too much force I will bend the plunger or the spring control fork. I have an O/A torch but have never used one for freeing rusted parts. WHAT AM I MISSING HERE?
Thanks in advance for your replies!

You are correct, it is due to lack of maintenance, on those tractors that have been used and the Draft Control adjusted as it should be, the end yoke has been removed and greased up and so it doesn't seize up, what doesn't help it is that is is a fine thread they use to get the correct adjustment (5/8" unf) You will have to cut it off and replace the Plunger rod and the end yoke, there is also a felt seal (you can make) and a heavy triangular shaped part that carries the load and a lighter triangular shaped part that hold the plunger tube and the seal in place, you wont know what these are like until you take it apart. All the part are available and not just from Agco so you do have a choice of suppliers. When you reassemble it the draft spring should just turn when you have an implement in the raised position using the top link to pull on the plunger, you will also need to adjust the Hydraulic Control Quadrant lever after that as it is all connected. If you need the info on how to adjust it all, email me at:- [email protected]
just tell me what you need and I will send it..John

Thanks for everyones advice. I cut the lift spring control plunger off and was able to remove the yoke from the remining piece. So now that I have become intimately familiar with my TO-30 hydraulic system, what other related parts should I replace while I have her opened up. The hydraulics were working before disassembly but I wonder if I should replace hydraulic cylinder rings, o-rings, or anything else?
Thanks

You can replace the rings if you wish, but you will need to hone the bore so that the new rings will bed in. Do be careful removing the old rings as the edges are VERY SHARP and will slice your fingers easily. Replace the felt seal under the triangles under the draft spring, this will stop water getting in. You need to adjust the spring so that it will just turn when you have a plow mounted and in the raised position. If the hydraulics were showing no signs of dropping, then everything should be OK. You could change the safety valve while you have the top cover off as it has the check valve on the end and that does wear and will cause it to drop...John

I went through the same process as vinnywv but I made a new plunger from a grade 8 bolt I picked up at the local aircraft salvage place. I did buy a new yoke because mine was worn through on the back side. Just for kicks, I cut the old plunger off at the yoke and drilled it out leaving only the thickness of the threads and finally got the yoke free but the threads were corroded almost completely away so the exercise served only to ratify the choice of buying a new yoke. I check the yoke for free movement about once a month now and always cover that area when I park the tractor - I really don't want to make that repair again, no matter how easy vinnywv makes it sound.

hey steve, i just went through the exact same problem a couple of weeks ago. what i had to end up doing was drastic but it worked like a charm. i went to my dealer and ordered a new plunger from agco, about 50$. pricy but they could get it and it works now. the yoke i found in a salvage yard in pa. wengers of myerstown. go to website and search for it last i checked they are still available there. then call them up and it will be at your door in about 4 days. $41.00. a mechanic told me he had to cut the plunger off of one before. so i took his route because i tried everything you did and to no avail and asked the same questions you did on this site. if you go back 3 or 4 pages you will see what i was told by john and jerry. they know what is going on, take any and all of their advices. it makes life easier. anyway, i had to cut the plunger in two through the spring. i used a metabo cutter and then finished it through with a hacksaw. i did not want ot damage the spring. before i did all of this i made sure the yoke and plunger were on there way to the house of course. i should have waited for them to get there but i got excited about getting them so i went a cuttin. i cut it as close to the tractor as i could. i am glad i did. if i hadn't then i would have had a harder time getting it out from inside. i had to take off the cover as you have. then i also had to take the pin out from the hydraulic piston to give me more room to get the pin out of the plunger because it was gauled up also. so i had to pull the plunger into the cover so to speak. from there i removed the pins from the control linkage and then also had to take the four bolts out of the lift piston housing so i could move everything enough to get that little rascal out of there. it sounds bad but honestly it was not. just lots of things to remember to get it back together. take your time and really no problem. once i got that all apart then the new plunger went in no problem then all back together with new/used yoke, and adjustments all went as descibed by the guys forementioned (john-uk and jerry-mt. again my many thanks for there help i can't say enough good things. it stinks but my to30 hydraulics are adjusted properly now and all freed up from the years of sitting. it also gave ame a wonderful chance to really clean out the hydraulic copartment and see how things work in there. if this is not clear please post again and i will try to clarify anything thats confusing. i will note that once i got it cut i tried to get the yoke and plunger apart in a vice, with more heat since now i wouldn't risk anything with the control spring, i used a cheater and pipe wrench and the plunger remaining just twisted off. yours may come apart that way once you get it out of there but mine did not so i had to order that yoke also. again be patient and if you have any questions or concerns let me know. i will check back all weekend. good luck vinny
