Starter gear drag

Just got another 20. She starts just fine. After running for a couple minutes you can hear the stater gear hit the flywheel teeth. The starter looks to be new. I tried shimming with a thick washer. That didn't do any good. I swapped staters with my old 20. The problemm moved with starter. I compared the two starters and they look the same. For some reason the starter gear just slides down the shaft and hits the flywheel gear. Help

Griz, It's been a few years since I rebuilt my starter, but my recollection is that your starter drive should be spring loaded to push the starter drive teeth back away from the flywheel when the flywheel speed exceeds your starter speed and unlocks your gear drive. Meaning, sounds like you have a bad starter drive. I think they sell'em on this site. Pretty easy job to replace.
