Requlator, or generator?

Have a Friend with a TO-35 and he says he charges the battery full, then will run it for 2-hours no problems.

After ~ 2 hours it will start to sputter and miss. and the battery is drained.

He has a generator, and I have not checked if he has polorized the generator.

Or could it be the regulator.

He has a 59 TO-30 so it should be a 12 volt system.

Any thoughts???

The regulator definitely could cause the problem. Do the F term. ground test like Phil mentioned to see how the generator responds. The regulator needs a good ground to work properly. If you suspect the regulator, make sure the mounting bolt with the ground lug is clean & shiny and grounded well before pulling the regulator. The TO-35 were 12V pos. ground right? If your friend was changing batteries or whatever, he may have switched the battery around to neg. ground thinking it was like a car charging system. Yeah, definitely polarize before doing anything.

Jeff,

A quick chk can be made by grounding the "F" terminal of the generator and chk the guage for 10-12 amps. If this is successful, then the regulator is faulty. If no output shown, then the generator is not functioning(assuming the guage is ok). I would make sure all connections are clean, and tight and polarize the generator and try again before changing out anything.
