My TO30 will not start. I was using it this weekend and when I shut it off it would not restart.The voltage on the battery is good. The starter just clicks one when you engage the shift lever to start. A couple of times in the last couple of weeks the starter engaged when shifting. Is the starting switch located on the top of the bell housing and the battery cable and starter cables hook to it? What do you think?

ditto to what Jerry said. Also, the starter ground path is thru the mounting bolts, tractor frame, to the ground lug on the back side of the dash. Poor ground = Poor starter operation. If you do the jumper test and your starter doesn't come to life, check your ground lug from the battery to the dash, they need to be clean & shiny. 6V systems are very in-tolerant to corrosion. Some guys run the battery ground cable right to the starter mount bolt instead of the dash to insure a good ground to the starter.

The reason the starter engaged is because you shifted to the start position. It happens to me on occasion.
You may have a starter that needs new brushes and a clean up of the commutator or your switch contacts are arced and corroded, or the switch may need an adjustment. Your cables could also be internally corroded I replaced my switch several years ago and I got intermittents starts untill I adjusted it. The switch mounts on a plate that has slots in it and if you can move the switch aft, you can get better contact with the shift rail that accuates the switch. Check Make sur ethe tractor is in neutral and using a jumper cable connect the battery directly to the starter motor lug . Thestarter should turn over . I fit doesn"t the starter is the problem. Try it on the starter cable at the switch connection. It shoud turn over . I fit doesn"t sustpect the cable or the connector.
If you have a n auto supply store nearby, they can check the starter for you or you can take it to an auto electric shop and they can do it for you and also rebuild it if it"s required. if it"s just brushes, you can do that yourself. You can also clean the commutator.
