PTO SHAFT OIL, NEED HELP PLEASE!!!

I HAVE TO REPLACE THE PTO OUTPUT SHAFT, THE OIL IS LEAKING THROUGH THE BEARING ARROUND THE SHAFT. I AM ALSO REPLACING IT WITH A STANDARD 1 3/8" SHAFT WHILE I AM AT IT. HOWEVER MY REPRODUCTION SHOP MANUAL DOES NOT SPECIFY EXACTLY WHAT TYPE OF FLUID TO USE TO TOP IT OFF AGAIN AS I AM QUITE SURE I WILL LOOSE SOME EVEN IF I DO IT NOSE DOWN IN A DITCH. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT OIL I SHOULD USE AND WHERE TO GET IT. I USUALLY BUY STUFF FOR IT AT TRACTOR SUPPLY BUT AM WILLING TO GET IT FROM ANYWHERE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP.

Unless you know the oil seal on the drive shaft from the Engine to the Transmission is good, don't just drop the front of the tractor to save draining the oil as if the seal is worn it will leak into the Clutch housing and maybe get all over the clutch plate, drain it unless you know for sure. Just use a Multi-grade oil like 15W/40, it may vary slightly from that depending on the temperatures in your zone, they will sell whatever is correct for your area. Just don't use gear oil or hydraulic fluid....John

The manual says GL-1 gear oil. This is available ffrom NAPA.


Part number 65-205 for 5 gallon bucket
PN 65-201 for 1 gallon jug.

Call ahead as it may take a day for them to get it from a central wearhouse if not in stock at local store.

15w40 rotella works just as good as anything, you will find in the archives of this site many oil references and many oil wars so to speak. i swithced to the rotella in mine and it is just fine. it can be bought at napa, tractor supply, and even walmart.

I use normal motor oil about 20-40w what ever is on the shelf here in Australia. And generally the cheapest stuff I can find. I use it in the engine, and transmission/pto/hydraulics. It works very well. I reckon that what ever is available today would have to equal or be better than than that produced in 1950.

I don't live in an area with extreme cold like Nth Europe, Nth USA, Canada. The extreme temperatures here range from -2C on a cold winters morning to 42C on a mid summers day. The average is around the 20C mark. But I'm sure oil sold in those colder areas for use in car engines will be of a slightly different range suited to a colder climate.

But the long and short of it is just USE MOTOR OIL and be done with it. :D

Eric,

You need only about 8" to 12" drop between the front and rear tires and you won't lose any trans oil. NAPA usually has GL-1 90 wt. gear oil which is what is recommended but there has been many that have changed to 10w30 oil and have had no ill effects with better response of the lift in cold weather. To change the oil I believe you will need 6 gal.

The problem with just dropping the front end to save draining the oil is if the oil seal on the drive shaft from Engine to Transmission is worn it will leak into the clutch housing, if you know the seal is OK then that is fine you can do it, but if you don't know, then drain the oil, it will maybe cheaper.....John
