Negative battery cable attachment

While servicing my 1955 TO35 today I noticed the negative battery cable (12 volt system) is quite frayed and I can see greenish corrosion inside it where the insulation has cracked open. It is still attached to the back of the dash as were the originals. I will pick up a new cable tommorrow and I have seen it advised on this forum to attach it to one of the starter to bellhousing bolts. While I could do this, it would be easier in my case to attach it to one of the bell housing bolts on the right hand side of the tractor because the negative battery post is on this side. Would this be ok, or should I attach it to the starter on the other side? Opinions?

This is probably over kill but the last hot rod show I went to there was a car engine with an earth lead that seemed to splice off half way along with about three off shoots attached to various parts of the engine and chassis. It looked proffesionally made with no visible joins in the cable.
Hardly the thing our tractors need. But it certainly emphasised the need for good earthing.

But then again it was a hot rod show. :D

Where ever you connect wires should be fine if area is clean.

Main issue, buy #1 guage battery cables, this is what they came with and they are picey.

Napa can order them if not in stock. Nothing will kill starting voltage faster than small unsize battery cables.

I'd avoid re-connecting the earth lead to the back of the dash. The dash is only bolted on, rusty bolts = high resistance = voltage loss! Connect the earth lead to the tractor engine.

All TE/TEA20 tractors had generators installed and were positive earth from the factory.

Absolutely, Most of the moving the ground cable to the starter bolt is referring to those of us who have the 6 volt systems-and need all the help we can get. I think that with a 12 volter, you could go right back to the dash and and most likely be fine..... ..BUT, moving it down to an actual bolt on the block will be great insurance.
I'm almost pos. that if you are running a 12v. system, then you will have a NEG. ground setup.

It doesn't really matter where you attach it to as long as it is attached to the main frame of the Tractor. Unless you have an Alternator fitted to this tractor it should be wired Positive to ground...check the wiring to the coil that it is on the correct terminals....John

The tractor was made positive ground as all Ferguson's were until well into the MF35 years. It doesn't matter if it is 12v or 6v. As Jerry has written, the only time it is usually negative is when an alternator is fitted and even then some are positive ground, but that is unusual, but there are some...John

Only if it isa 12V alternator. If it"s a generator, it can be grounded either way as long as the generator is polarized before the first start.

Clean things up at the easily-accessable bolt, and put the cable there.
