Check your spark first. Make sure that you have the requisite FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK. If you don"t,check your distributor for wear by rotating the engine till the points close. The watching the points, push radially on the distributor shaft. You should not see motion at the points. If the points open, then the bushing and/or shaft are worn and the distributor needs to be re-bushed. Check the point for pitting and/or corrosion and make sure they are set correctly. Check to make sure that the advance is not stuck and the timing is correct.

If the spark is FAT AND BLUISH-WHITE, your ignition system is fine, check the advance and then go on to make sure the mixture is correct. Too lean a power jet setting will cause it to stumble on acceleration but not sputter and die unless it is really really leaned out. Since it idles fine I"d suspect the power jet or the transition port as the problem IF the problem is in the carb.

Make sure that the power lead from the ignition switch to the coil is connected to the correct terminal...John

Sounds like either a out of adjust mixture of your power adjust screw on the carb, or more likely a typical poor spark problem.
You can try adjusting your mixture screw (the big one on the carb) to see if you can get it to steady out. Also pull a spark plug and check your spark, should be a blue/white fat spark. A yellowish/orange spark is weak and will cause your problem. If your spark is indeed weak, double check your point gap to make sure they have not slipped.
I doubt it is water in the gas.

George

That is actually a really good question! I had to look that one up in the manual, which gives no real guidance at all. I can tell you that back in the "old" days I used to drive a Pontiac, and a VW that had points. I ran those points down until they were paper-thin nubs. I would clean & re-gap them once in a while, then keep running. As long as your points are wearing even, and are not pitted/burned, you can keep using them and just check your gap. I used to (and still do on my TO) clean the points by running a strip of brown paper bag back & forth between the points.

nope, never rebuilt the distributor. But I know other guys on this forum have. You should probably post a new message asking about that so your message is at the top of the list where everyone will see it.
